QR Code Scanner from Image

Drop, paste or choose an image with a QR code to see what is inside — a link, a Wi-Fi network, a contact card, an event — before you act on it. The image is read on your device and never uploaded.

  • Upload, drop or paste
  • Links shown before opening
  • Wi-Fi, vCard and events
  • Nothing uploaded
How it works ↓QR content stays on your device.

How to read a QR code from an image

  1. Add the image. Drag a file onto the box, choose one, or copy a screenshot and paste it with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac). PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and SVG files work.
  2. Read the result. The scanner shows what kind of code it is and its content, split into fields: the network name and password of a Wi-Fi code, the name and phone numbers of a contact card, the date and place of an event.
  3. Use it. Copy the text, open a link after checking where it goes, or press “Make a new code with this” to open the content in the generator, where you can restyle it, fix a detail or download it again.

See where a link goes before you open it

A QR code on a poster, a parking meter or an email can lead anywhere. Reading it from a photo here shows the full address and the domain it goes to, and nothing opens until you choose to. That makes it easy to spot a code that has been covered by a sticker with a lookalike address, or a link that is not what the sign says.

When a code cannot be read

The scanner tries your browser’s built-in barcode detector first, where the browser has one, and then the open-source jsQR reader at several image sizes. If neither finds a code, the image usually needs one of these fixes:

  • Crop closer. A small code in a large photo has few pixels per module. Crop or zoom so the code fills most of the image.
  • Straighten it. A code photographed at a steep angle is distorted. Take the photo from straight in front.
  • Sharpen and light it. Blur, glare on glossy paper and deep shadows hide the modules. Hold steady, tap to focus and avoid reflections.
  • Keep the border. The white margin around the code (the quiet zone) helps the reader find it; do not crop into it.

Only QR codes are read here. Other barcodes, such as the lines on a product package, are not.

Remake, restyle or recover a code

Lost the original file of a QR code you printed? Photograph the print, read it here and press “Make a new code with this”. The generator opens with the content already filled in — the right type, such as Wi-Fi, vCard or event — so you can change the colours, add a logo or a frame, and download a sharp SVG or PDF for a reprint. It is also a quick way to check a finished design: download it from the generator and read it back here.

Private by design

The image is opened and decoded in your browser tab. It is not uploaded, stored or sent anywhere, which matters for Wi-Fi codes with passwords, contact cards and internal links. When you open content in the generator, it is handed over through your browser’s own storage and removed as soon as the generator has read it.

Questions

Is the image uploaded?

No. The image is decoded in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so Wi-Fi passwords and private links stay with you.

Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot?

Yes. Take the screenshot, copy it and paste it here with Ctrl+V or ⌘+V, or save it and drop the file onto the box.

Why can’t it read my image?

Usually the code is too small in the picture, photographed at an angle, blurred or partly cut off. Crop closer, take the photo straight on and keep the white border around the code.

Does it read Wi-Fi QR codes?

Yes. It shows the network name, the security type and the password, which stays hidden until you press Show. You can also turn it into a new Wi-Fi code.

Can it read several codes in one image?

Where the browser’s built-in barcode detector is available it can return several codes; the jsQR fallback reads one code per image. For reliable results, use one code per image.

Can I edit a code I have scanned?

Not the printed code itself, but you can make a new one: press “Make a new code with this”, change what you need in the generator and download it.
